Egidius Linnig, Stormy WeatherThis mid 19th century oil painting by Belgian artist Egidius Linnig (1821 1860) depicts a fleet of sailing vessels battling through rising seas beneath a shifting sky. At the centre, a heavily laden fishing smack heels sharply into the wind as white surf crashes against her stern. Sailors in flashes of vermilion and ochre work urgently across the deck while the great cream coloured mainsail strains under pressure. Around her, companion vessels emerge
